About this edition

1Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bosra, this beautiful one in his robe, walking in the greatness of his strength. I, that speak justice, and am a defender to save.

2Why then is thy apparel red, and thy garments like theirs that tread in the winepress?

3I have trodden the winepress alone, and of the Gentiles there is not a man with me: I have trampled on them in my indignation, and have trodden them down in my wrath, and their blood is sprinkled upon my garments, and I have stained all my apparel.

4For the day of vengeance is in my heart, the year of my redemption is come.

5I looked about, and there was none to help: I sought, and there was none to give aid: and my own arm hath saved for me, and my indignation itself hath helped me.

6And I have trodden down the people in my wrath, and have made them drunk in my indignation, and have brought down their strength to the earth.

7I will remember the tender mercies of the Lord, the praise of the Lord for all the things that the Lord hath bestowed upon us, and for the multitude of his good things to the house of Israel, which he hath given them according to his kindness, and according to the multitude of his mercies.

8And he said: Surely they are my people, children that will not deny: so he became their saviour.

9In all their affliction he was not troubled, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love, and in his mercy he redeemed them, and he carried them and lifted them up all the days of old.

10But they provoked to wrath, and afflicted the spirit of his Holy One: and he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

11And he remembered the days of old of Moses, and of his people: Where is he that brought them up out of the sea, with the shepherds of his flock? where is he that put in the midst of them the spirit of his Holy One?

12He that brought out Moses by the right hand, by the arm of his majesty: that divided the waters before them, to make himself an everlasting name.

13He that led them out through the deep, as a horse in the wilderness that stumbleth not.

14As a beast that goeth down in the field, the spirit of the Lord was their leader: so didst thou lead thy people to make thyself a glorious name.

15Look down from heaven, and behold from thy holy habitation and the place of thy glory: where is thy zeal, and thy strength, the multitude of thy bowels, and of thy mercies? they have held back themselves from me.

16For thou art our father, and Abraham hath not known us, and Israel hath been ignorant of us: thou, O Lord, art our father, our redeemer, from everlasting is thy name.

17Why hast thou made us to err, O Lord, from thy ways: why hast thou hardened our heart, that we should not fear thee? return for the sake of thy servants, the tribes of thy inheritance.

18They have possessed thy holy people as nothing: our enemies have trodden down thy sanctuary.

19We are become as in the beginning, when thou didst not rule over us, and when we were not called by thy name.

About this edition

11Et recordatus est dierum sæculi Moysi, et populi sui. Ubi est qui eduxit eos de mari cum pastoribus gregis sui? Ubi est qui posuit in medio ejus spiritum Sancti sui;

12qui eduxit ad dexteram Moysen, brachio majestatis suæ; qui scidit aquas ante eos, ut faceret sibi nomen sempiternum;

13qui eduxit eos per abyssos, quasi equum in deserto non impingentem?

14Quasi animal in campo descendens, spiritus Domini ductor ejus fuit. Sic adduxisti populum tuum, ut faceres tibi nomen gloriæ.

18Quasi nihilum possederunt populum sanctum tuum: hostes nostri conculcaverunt sanctificationem tuam.

19Facti sumus quasi in principio, cum non dominareris nostri, neque invocaretur nomen tuum super nos.]

About this edition

1Who is this, who arrives from Edom with dyed garments from Bozrah? This is the Handsome One in his robe, advancing by the fullness of his strength. It is I, the Speaker of Justice, and I am the Fighter for Salvation.

2So then, why is your garment red, and why are your vestments like the ones of those who tread the winepress?

3I have trod the winepress alone. And among the nations, there is no man beside me. I have trampled on them in my fury, and I have tread them down in my wrath. And so, their blood has been sprinkled on my vestments, and I have stained all my garments.

4For the day of vengeance is in my heart. The year of my redemption has arrived.

5I gazed around, and there was no one to assist. I sought, and there was no one who would help. And so, my own arm has saved for me, and my own wrath itself has assisted me.

6And I have trampled the peoples in my fury, and I have inebriated them with my indignation, and I have torn down their strength to the ground.

7I will remember the compassion of the Lord, the praise of the Lord over all that the Lord has bestowed on us, and over the multitude of his good things for the house of Israel, which he has granted to them according to his leniency, and according to the multitude of his mercies.

8And he said: “Yet truly, these are my people, sons who have not been disowned.” And he became their Savior.

9Throughout all their tribulation, he was not troubled, for the Angel of his presence saved them. With his love, and by his leniency, he has redeemed them, and he has carried them and lifted them up, throughout all the days of the ages.

10But they themselves provoked to wrath and afflicted his Holy Spirit, and he was turned to be for them like an enemy, and he himself went to war against them.

11And he remembered the days of ancient times, the days of Moses and his people. Where is he who led them out of the sea, with the shepherds of his flock? Where is he who placed his Holy Spirit in their midst?

12He led Moses by the right hand, with the arm of his majesty. He split the waters before them, in order to make an everlasting name for himself.

13He led them through the abyss, like a horse which does not stumble, in the desert.

14Like an animal who descends to an open field, the Spirit of the Lord was their guide. Thus did you lead your people, in order to make a glorious name for yourself.

15Gaze down from heaven, and behold from your holy habitation and from your glory. Where is your zeal, and your strength, the fullness of your heart and of your compassion? They have held themselves back from me.

16For you are our Father, and Abraham has not known us, and Israel has been ignorant of us. You are our Father, O Lord our Redeemer. Your name is beyond all ages.

17Why have you allowed us to stray from your ways, O Lord? Why have you hardened our heart, so that we do not fear you? Return, for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your inheritance.

18They have possessed your holy people as if it were nothing. Our enemies have trampled your sanctuary.

19We have become as we were in the beginning, when you did not rule over us, and when we were not called by your name.
