Job 35

Douay-Rheims 1899

About this edition

1Moreover Eliu spoke these words:

2Doth thy thought seem right to thee, that thou shouldst say: I am more just than God?

3For thou saidst: That which is right doth not please thee: or what will it profit thee if I sin?

4Therefore I will answer thy words, and thy friends with thee.

5Look up to heaven and see, and behold the sky, that it is higher than thee.

6If thou sin, what shalt thou hurt him? and if thy iniquities be multiplied, what shalt thou do against him?

7And if thou do justly, what shalt thou give him, or what shall he receive of thy hand?

8Thy wickedness may hurt a man that is like thee: and thy justice may help the son of man.

9By reason of the multitude of oppressions they shall cry out: and shall wail for the violence of the arm of tyrants.

10And he hath not said: Where is God, who made me, who hath given songs in the night?

11Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and instructeth us more than the fowls of the air.

12There shall they cry, and he will not hear, because of the pride of evil men.

13God therefore will not hear in vain, and the Almighty will look into the causes of every one.

14Yea when thou shalt say: He considereth not: be judged before him, and expect him.

15For he doth not now bring on his fury, neither doth he revenge wickedness exceedingly.

16Therefore Job openeth his mouth in vain, and multiplieth words without knowledge.

About this edition

10Et non dixit: Ubi est Deus qui fecit me, qui dedit carmina in nocte;

About this edition

1After this, Eliu again spoke in this way:

2Does it seem right to you in your thoughts, that you should say, “I am more just than God?”

3For you said, “Having done what is right does not please you,” and, “How will it benefit you, if I sin?”

4And so, I will respond to your words, and to your friends who are with you.

5Look up towards heaven and consider; also, think about the sky, which is higher than you.

6If you sin, how will it hurt him? And if your iniquities are multiplied, what will you do against him?

7Furthermore, if you act justly, what will you give him, or what will he receive from your hand?

8Your impiety may hurt a man who is like you, though your justice may help the son of the man.

9Because of the multitude of false accusers, they will cry out; and they will lament because of the strong arm of the tyrants.

10Yet he has not said: “Where is God, who made me, who has given songs in the night,

11who teaches us in addition to the beasts of the earth, and who educates us along with the birds of the air?”

12There they will cry, and he will not heed them, because of the arrogance of the wicked.

13Therefore, God does not hear in vain, and the Almighty will look into each and every case.

14And so, when you say, “He does not examine,” be judged before him, but wait for him.

15For, at the present time, he does not bring forth his fury, nor does he punish sin exceedingly.

16Therefore, Job has opened his mouth in vain and has multiplied words without knowledge.
