1And it came to pass, that on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes, with the ancients, met together,

2And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? or, Who is he that hath given thee this authority?

3And Jesus answering, said to them: I will also ask you one thing. Answer me:

4The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?

5But they thought within themselves, saying: If we shall say, From heaven: he will say: Why then did you not believe him?

6But if we say, Of men, the whole people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

7And they answered, that they knew not whence it was.

8And Jesus said to them: Neither do I tell thee by what authority I do these things.

9And he began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen: and he was abroad for a long time.

10And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard. Who, beating him, sent him away empty.

11And again he sent another servant. But they beat him also, and treating him reproachfully, sent him away empty.

12And again he sent the third: and they wounded him also, and cast him out.

13Then the lord of the vineyard said: What shall I do? I will send my beloved son: it may be, when they see him, they will reverence him.

14Whom when the husbandmen saw, they thought within themselves, saying: This is the heir, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

15So casting him out of the vineyard, they killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do to them?

16He will come, and will destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. Which they hearing, said to him: God forbid.

17But he looking on them, said: What is this then that is written, The stone, which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?

18Whosoever shall fall upon that stone, shall be bruised: and upon whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him the same hour: but they feared the people, for they knew that he spoke this parable to them.

20And being upon the watch, they sent spies, who should feign themselves just, that they might take hold of him in his words, that they might deliver him up to the authority and power of the governor.

21And they asked him, saying: Master, we know that thou speakest and teachest rightly: and thou dost not respect any person, but teachest the way of God in truth.

22Is it lawful for us to give tribute to Caesar, or no?

23But he considering their guile, said to them: Why tempt you me?

24Shew me a penny. Whose image and inscription hath it? They answering, said to him, Caesar’s.

25And he said to them: Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s: and to God the things that are God’s.

26And they could not reprehend his word before the people: and wondering at his answer, they held their peace.

27And there came to him some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection, and they asked him,

28Saying: Master, Moses wrote unto us, If any man’s brother die, having a wife, and he leave no children, that his brother should take her to wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

29There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died without children.

30And the next took her to wife, and he also died childless.

31And the third took her. And in like manner all the seven, and they left no children, and died.

32Last of all the woman died also.

33In the resurrection therefore, whose wife of them shall she be? For all the seven had her to wife.

34And Jesus said to them: The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35But they that shall be accounted worthy of that world, and of the resurrection from the dead, shall neither be married, nor take wives.

36Neither can they die any more: for they are equal to the angels, and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.

37Now that the dead rise again, Moses also shewed, at the bush, when he called the Lord, The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;

38For he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live to him.

39And some of the scribes answering, said to him: Master, thou hast said well.

40And after that they durst not ask him any more questions.

41But he said to them: How say they that Christ is the son of David?

42And David himself saith in the book of Psalms: The Lord said to my Lord, sit thou on my right hand,

43Till I make thy enemies thy footstool.

44David then calleth him Lord: and how is he his son?

45And in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:

46Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplace, and the first chairs in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts:

47Who devour the houses of widows, feigning long prayer. These shall receive greater damnation.

Respondete mihi:

4baptismus Joannis de cælo erat, an ex hominibus?

8Et Jesus ait illis: Neque ego dico vobis in qua potestate hæc facio.

11Et addidit alterum servum mittere.

15Et ejectum illum extra vineam, occiderunt. Quid ergo faciet illis dominus vineæ?

16veniet, et perdet colonos istos, et dabit vineam aliis. Quo audito, dixerunt illi: Absit.

22Licet nobis tributum dare Cæsari, an non?

23Considerans autem dolum illorum, dixit ad eos: Quid me tentatis?

24ostendite mihi denarium.

33In resurrectione ergo, cujus eorum erit uxor? siquidem septem habuerunt eam uxorem.

42et ipse David dicit in libro Psalmorum: Dixit Dominus Domino meo: sede a dextris meis,

43donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum.

46Attendite a scribis, qui volunt ambulare in stolis, et amant salutationes in foro, et primas cathedras in synagogis, et primos discubitus in conviviis,

47qui devorant domos viduarum, simulantes longam orationem: hi accipient damnationem majorem.

2and they spoke to him, saying: “Tell us, by what authority do you do these things? Or, who is it that has given you this authority?”

3And in response, Jesus said to them: “I will also question you about one word. Respond to me:

4The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men?”

5So they discussed it among themselves, saying: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’

6But if we say, ‘Of men,’ the whole people will stone us. For they are certain that John was a prophet.”

7And so they responded that they did not know where it was from.

8And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

9Then he began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard, and he loaned it to settlers, and he was on a sojourn for a long time.

10And in due time, he sent a servant to the farmers, so that they would give to him from the fruit of the vineyard. And they beat him and drove him away, empty-handed.

11And he continued to send another servant. But beating him and treating him with contempt, they likewise sent him away, empty-handed.

12And he continued to send a third. And wounding him also, they drove him away.

13Then the lord of the vineyard said: ‘What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps when they have seen him, they will respect him.’

14And when the settlers had seen him, they discussed it among themselves, saying: ‘This one is the heir. Let us kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.’

15And forcing him outside of the vineyard, they killed him. What, then, will the lord of the vineyard do to them?”

16“He will come and destroy those settlers, and he will give the vineyard to others.” And upon hearing this, they said to him, “Let it not be.”

17Then, gazing at them, he said: “Then what does this mean, which is written: ‘The stone which the builders have rejected, the same has become the head of the corner?’

18Everyone who falls on that stone will be shattered. And anyone upon whom it falls will be crushed.”

19And the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, were seeking to lay hands on him in that same hour, but they feared the people. For they realized that he had spoken this parable about them.

20And being attentive, they sent traitors, who would pretend that they were just, so that they might catch him in his words and then hand him over to the power and authority of the procurator.

21And they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and that you do not consider anyone’s status, but you teach the way of God in truth.

22Is it lawful for us to pay the tribute to Caesar, or not?”

23But realizing their deceitfulness, he said to them: “Why do you test me?

24Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” In response, they said to him, “Caesar’s.”

25And so, he said to them: “Then repay the things that are Caesar’s, to Caesar, and the things that are God’s, to God.”

26And they were not able to contradict his word before the people. And being amazed at his answer, they were silent.

27Now some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is a resurrection, approached him. And they questioned him,

28saying: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us: If any man’s brother will have died, having a wife, and if he does not have any children, then his brother should take her as his wife, and he should raise up offspring for his brother.

29And so there were seven brothers. And the first took a wife, and he died without sons.

30And the next one married her, and he also died without a son.

31And the third married her, and similarly all seven, and none of them left behind any offspring, and they each died.

32Last of all, the woman also died.

33In the resurrection, then, whose wife will she be? For certainly all seven had her as a wife.”

34And so, Jesus said to them: “The children of this age marry and are given in marriage.

35Yet truly, those who shall be held worthy of that age, and of the resurrection from the dead, will neither be married, nor take wives.

36For they can no longer die. For they are equal to the Angels, and they are children of God, since they are children of the resurrection.

37For in truth, the dead do rise again, as Moses also showed beside the bush, when he called the Lord: ‘The God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’

38And so he is not the God of the dead, but of the living. For all are alive to him.”

39Then some of the scribes, in response, said to him, “Teacher, you have spoken well.”

40And they no longer dared to question him about anything.

41But he said to them: “How can they say that the Christ is the son of David?

42Even David himself says, in the book of Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand,

45Now in the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples:
